Social Partnership: From Strong State to Strong Civil Society
On February 23 and 24, 2016, Regional Dialogue, in cooperation with local partners NANNOUz and NIMFOGO, conducted the final two events within its German grant – the International Conference “Social Partnership: From Strong State to Strong Civil Society” and the Public Discussion on civil society under the same title. The keynote address at the international conference was delivered by H.E. Neithart Höfer-Wissing, Ambassador of Germany in Uzbekistan. There were also introductory words given by the Director of Regional Dialogue Mjuša Sever, Acting Director of NANNOUz, Mr. Akhmadjon Uzakdjanov and Head of the Project of NIMFOGO, Ms. Gulrukhsor Khatamova. The keynote address of Day 2 was delivered by Ms. Renate Charlotte Lehner, Political Secretary of German Embassy in Uzbekistan. RD brought for the purpose of the International Conference six foreign experts: Alenka Oblak (Slovenia), Gorana Flaker (Slovenia), Rachelle Cohen (USA), Inkeri Aarnio-Lwoff (Finland), Darija Marić (Croatia) and Margreet Goelema (Netherlands). The International conference covered a broad area of topics related to civil society: the role of civil society for the citizens, role of small NGOs, the role of umbrella organizations, working with volunteers, role of media including social networks, care for vulnerable groups, social partnership between state bodies and civil society, funding for NGOs, donors’ expectations, and the future of civil society and its role. Mr. Alei El Dorry, Deputy Director of USAID in Uzbekistan, presented what donors expect from NGOs, and Mr. Radoslaw Darski, representative of the EU Mission in Uzbekistan, briefed about European experiences in supporting NGOs. The conference concluded with final recommendations for the future.
