The Public Discussion, following the international conference started off with a keynote address delivered by H.E. Neithart Höfer-Wissing, Ambassador of Germany. The panel discussion, moderated by Mrs. Mjuša Sever, Director of Regional Dialogue and included two Uzbek and two international guest panelists: Ms. Darija Marić, Counselor, Croatian Government Office for Strategic Planning, Programming and Information;Ms. Margreet Goelema, Senior Adviser for Civil Society, GIZ, Netherlands; Ms. Gulrukhsor Khatamova, Head of the project of NIMFOGO and Mrs. Lola Erniyazova, NGO »Soglom oila«, Khorezm Region, Uzbekistan. Panelists discussed European experiences and the experiences of Uzbekistan on both national and local levels from the point of civil society. The main issues covered public dialogue on issues of special interests for population, the role of civil society; civil society and its mission; government’s support to civil society and ways of cooperation with government sectors on national and local levels; the role of small NGOs and their contribution to society; the support that the umbrella organizations need to offer small NGOs; the main challenges for NGOs, and the issues of the government's control over civil society and - likewise– the civil society's role in implementing control over the government. The public discussion included questions and answers section with the audience. Panelists also tried to share their comments as to what seem to be the main needs of civil society in the present by sharing experiences from their environments. They also shared their vision about the future role of civil society and proposals for improving cooperation between civil society, media and the government.
