
The Republic of Uzbekistan is a doubly landlocked country in the heart of Central Asia. It shares borders with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. Uzbekistan declared indepedence on September 1, 1991.
The president of Uzbekistan is Islam Karimov. The capital and the largest city of Uzbekistan is Tashkent.
The territory of today’s Uzbekistan was incorporated into the Russian Empire in the 19th century and in 1924 became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, known as the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic.
Uzbekistan’s economy relies mainly on commodity production, including cotton, gold, uranium, and natural gas. With the population of 27,606,007 people it is the most populous country in Central Asia. The Uzbek language is the only official state language. The dominant religion in Uzbekistan is suni Islam.
